GPMTA Performance Decorum
As a professional association, it is very important for our students to maintain a consistent, high level of decorum at all our GPMTA Festivals, Recitals and Competitions. Therefore, when performing, students are to bow before the performance (Musical hello) as well as at the end (Thank you for your attention.). Audience members are asked to silence their cell phones and refrain from any flash photography during the performance.
Guidelines for Proper Performance Attire for Piano Students
It is also very important for students to present a respectful and modest appearance to the audience when performing during our GPMTA Festivals, Recitals and Competitions. The following are guidelines of dress for the students who perform. Each teacher should adapt these guidelines to their particular standards of performance within their studio.
Suggestion: Students should rehearse at home in their performance attire.
For Girls:
For Guys:
These guidelines apply to all Recitals, Festivals and Competitions. *The only exception to this dress code would be the Masquerade Recital where costumes are allowed and a more casual attire, such as nice blue jeans and T-Shirts, may be worn.
Teachers of Strings, Voice or other instruments are to adapt these Guidelines as they apply to their students and their instruments
Suggestion: Students should rehearse at home in their performance attire.
For Girls:
- Girls should dress modestly.
- Long dress pants or nice dresses or skirts should be worn. *No blue jeans are allowed. Dress pants should not be low-waisted. Dresses or skirts should be no shorter than the top of the knee when seated at the piano. Flowing skirts and dresses are more conducive to modesty and comfort while seated at the piano.
- Blouses or tops should be appropriate. No low-cut necklines. Shirts and dresses with sleeves are highly recommended. Shirts or blouses should be long enough to cover the top of the pants or skirt. When seated at the piano, no midriff should be showing.
- Shoes should be dressy enough to match the outfit. No tennis shoes or flip-flops are allowed. The height of the heel should be appropriate to proper use of the pedal. Teachers are to help their students determine this. Very high heels and platform shoes are not conducive to good pedaling.
For Guys:
- Boys should dress neatly.
- Long dress pants should be worn. *No blue jeans are allowed.
- Button-down shirts are preferred, but all shirts should have a collar (such as the Polo Shirt.) Ties are optional but are encouraged for competitions. *No T-Shirts are allowed.
- Dress shoes should be worn (polished if needed). Dockers and loafers are acceptable. However, flip-flops or tennis shoes are not allowed. No slip-on shoes such as Crocs are allowed.
